Best Tourist Spots in Austin, Texas: A Photographer’s Guide
Austin, Texas, is a city full of vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and unique experiences that make it an incredible place to visit—and to photograph. Whether you're a local or a tourist, the city offers plenty of spots that are perfect for capturing the spirit of Austin. While there are endless options, here are some of my personal favorite locations that are perfect for both sightseeing and photography. From natural beauty to iconic Austin landmarks, these spots won’t disappoint.
1. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
One of my absolute favorite places to visit (and shoot) is the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Located a bit outside of downtown, this nature preserve is a must-see for anyone who loves native Texas plants and landscapes. The Wildflower Center showcases over 900 species of native plants across its gardens and walking trails, offering plenty of opportunities to capture vibrant flora and peaceful natural settings.
Spring and fall are particularly great times to visit, as the wildflowers are in full bloom, adding a pop of color to every photo. I love taking my time here, strolling the trails, and photographing the beautiful blooms, towering live oaks, and tranquil ponds. It's also a fantastic spot for birdwatching and capturing wildlife in a calm, scenic environment.
2. South Congress Avenue (SoCo)
No visit to Austin would be complete without a stop at South Congress Avenue, or "SoCo," as locals call it. This eclectic street is lined with quirky shops, colorful murals, trendy boutiques, and some of the best people-watching in the city. You can easily spend a day here exploring everything from vintage stores to art galleries, but what makes SoCo a photographer's paradise is the sheer variety of scenes.
From the iconic "I love you so much" mural on the side of Jo’s Coffee to the bustling street scenes of locals and tourists, South Congress is a place where you can really capture the creative and diverse spirit of Austin. It’s also a great spot for street photography, with its vibrant colors, unique storefronts, and ever-changing crowds. And if you’re here around sunset, you’ll get a stunning view of the city skyline from the top of the hill.
3. The Oasis on Lake Travis
For breathtaking views and a relaxed vibe, the Oasis on Lake Travis is one of the best spots in Austin. Known as the "Sunset Capital of Texas," this multi-level restaurant and event space offers panoramic views of Lake Travis, and it’s the perfect place to capture a beautiful Texas sunset.
The Oasis sits high up on a bluff, providing stunning vistas of the lake and surrounding Hill Country. Whether you're snapping photos of the colorful sky reflecting off the water or enjoying a laid-back meal, it’s a photographer's dream, especially if you’re into landscape photography.
While the sunset is the main event, don't overlook the Oasis' quirky décor. The restaurant is filled with rustic sculptures and Texas-themed art, which add even more visual interest to your shots. Plus, the sprawling outdoor terraces offer plenty of different vantage points, so you can get the perfect angle for that dramatic sunset photo.
4. Terry Black’s BBQ
Austin is famous for its barbecue, and Terry Black’s BBQ is one of the best places in town to experience this culinary tradition. Located in the Barton Springs area, this local favorite serves up some of the best smoked meats around, including brisket, ribs, and sausage. While you’re enjoying some classic Texas BBQ, don’t forget to take out your camera—Terry Black’s is not only a place to eat, but also a great spot to photograph the essence of Texas barbecue culture.
The rustic interiors, smoky pits, and rows of mouthwatering meats make for some great food photography opportunities. If you’re looking to capture the heart and soul of Austin’s food scene, Terry Black’s is the perfect place. And, of course, after indulging in some of the best barbecue in Texas, you’ll leave with both a full stomach and a memory card full of great shots.
5. Zilker Metropolitan Park and Barton Springs
If you want to enjoy some of Austin’s best outdoor spaces, head over to Zilker Metropolitan Park, one of the city’s most beloved green spaces. Zilker Park is home to many popular attractions, including Barton Springs Pool, a natural spring-fed swimming hole that’s 68 degrees year-round. Zilker Park is a fantastic place for nature photography, especially if you're looking to capture scenic shots of people enjoying the outdoors, playing Frisbee, having picnics, or kayaking on Lady Bird Lake.
In the spring, Zilker hosts the Zilker Kite Festival, where the sky fills with hundreds of colorful kites, making for a truly photogenic event. Barton Springs Pool is also a great spot for capturing unique water shots, whether it’s of people swimming or the tranquil ripples in the crystal-clear water. Zilker Park offers a little bit of everything: landscapes, city views, and candid shots of people enjoying Austin’s outdoor lifestyle.

Mount Bonnell: For one of the best views of Austin’s skyline and the surrounding Hill Country, head to the top of Mount Bonnell. This is a favorite for sunset photography or capturing wide, panoramic views of the city and the Colorado River.
Texas State Capitol: The Texas Capitol is an iconic building with beautiful architecture that looks great in wide-angle shots. Take a stroll around the grounds, and you’ll find plenty of angles for capturing this historic site.
